Alaska: The Great Land

In 2008, we embarked on an epic road trip up north to the “Last Frontier”. It was an exciting time to be in the “49th state”: Alaska was preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary of statehood; the governor, Sarah Palin, was running for Vice President; and the senior U.S. Senator, Ted Stevens, was indicted, convicted, and narrowly lost reelection after 40 years in office. Since then, we’ve experienced our first winter in Alaska, featuring bitterly cold temperatures (-20° or lower for three weeks straight) and lots of snow. The cold wasn’t so bad (we’d lived in Russia for two years, after all), but shoveling snow and driving in winter conditions were new to us. The reward for surviving the long winter is the unparalleled Alaskan summer, when everything suddenly bursts to life and the days last forever.
